Purpose:

National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) envisions an America in which all populations will have an equal opportunity to live long, healthy, and productive lives. The Friends of NIMHD coalition is dedicated to supporting the mission of the NIMHD to lead scientific research to improve minority health and reduce health disparities.

Current members include academic research centers, federal and local agencies, state and local governments, and civil rights, community-based, public health, health advocacy, and economic development organizations.

NADPH is the lead organization for the Friends of NIMHD which is operated under its Advocacy, Thought Leadership, and Policy (ATP) program.

Friends of NIMHD initiatives include hosting conferences and workshops at the national, regional and community level to gather and share first-hand information and experiences, increase awareness of these critical issues, and expand the number of organizations that will partner in Friends’ work. The meetings are developed in coordination with key partner groups, including academic research centers, federal and local agencies, state and local governments, and civil rights, community-based, public health, health advocacy, and economic development organizations.

A key element includes the dissemination of the outputs of NIMHD-funded research to policy and other decision-makers, as well as developing and executing strategies to spur action on these issues. Programs include policymaker, media, and thought leader briefings and collaborations with organizations specifically focused on increasing research funding, minority participation in clinical trials, and diversity in the fields of science and medicine.

Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections

Did You Know?

The origin of National Minority Health Month was the 1915 establishment of National Negro Health Week by Booker T. Washington. In 2002, National Minority Health Month received support from the U.S. Congress with a concurrent resolution (H. Con. Res. 388) that “a National Minority Health and Health Disparities Month should be established to promote educational efforts on the health problems currently facing minorities and other populations experiencing health disparities.” The resolution encouraged “all health organizations and Americans to conduct appropriate programs and activities to promote healthfulness in minority and other communities experiencing health disparities.”

Where Are We Now?

There is a revolution in healthcare practices that is being driven by innovation in medical science and technology. Communities where the real problems around health disparities exist are behind in their access to, and ability to benefit from these innovations.

What Can You Do?
