The STudent AI and Innovation Research Success (ST.A.I.R.S.) Program

Overview

The STAIRS Program (STudent AI Innovation and Research Success) is a national workforce training and innovation initiative developed and led by the National Accelerator for Discovery in Precision Health (NADPH). STAIRS prepares students, early-career professionals, and emerging leaders with applied skills in artificial intelligence, robotics, data science, and innovation through immersive, experiential learning.

Grounded in NADPH’s mission to expand access to high-demand technical skills, STAIRS creates inclusive, future-ready pathways into technology, health, and innovation careers. The program builds on NADPH’s extensive partnership experience with organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to design training that bridges education, innovation, and workforce readiness.

Where STAIRS Happens

STAIRS is a modular, scalable program that can be hosted in partnership with:

• Academic institutions (universities, community colleges, research centers)

• Technology companies and industry partners

• Innovation and experiential learning hubs

Each STAIRS cohort is tailored to its host environment while maintaining a consistent NADPH-led curriculum and outcomes.

Current Program

NADPH is proud to present a STAIRS program in partnership with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center Space Camp Institute, an internationally recognized destination for immersive STEM education.

Hosted on the Space Camp Institute campus, this program brings NADPH’s applied AI and innovation curriculum into a high-impact learning environment. Participants engage in hands-on projects, team-based challenges, and real-world problem solving that integrate AI, robotics, data, and decision-making.

This initiative demonstrates how STAIRS can be embedded within world-class institutions while remaining part of a broader national program developed and stewarded by NADPH.

What Makes STAIRS Different

In a STAIRS experience, participants:

• Build practical skills through project-based learning

• Work on real-world challenges aligned to workforce and industry needs

• Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams during innovation sprints

• Learn from mentors across academia, industry, and research

• Develop pathways into advanced education and technology-driven careers

Who Can Join

STAIRS is designed for students, recent graduates, early-career professionals, and career changers from diverse educational and professional backgrounds.

Ready for the Next Step

Participation in STAIRS begins with a Program Briefing—a structured informational session hosted by NADPH for prospective participants, partners, and sponsors.

Program briefings introduce the STAIRS experience while allowing the NADPH team to:

• Understand participant goals and workforce needs

• Align cohort focus and delivery to real-world applications

• Confirm readiness to launch a committed, purpose-built cohort

This approach ensures that every STAIRS cohort is customized, relevant, and aligned to participant and partner priorities.
